Liposuction Neck

Surgical procedures that effectively and safely remove fat from localized areas, without removing any excess skin, have been used for approximately 25years.  Liposuction techniques have evolved over this time and in the hands of experienced plastic surgeons, such as Dr. Samuel, liposuction is an effective and dependable procedure that can change the shape of various areas of the body.  Dr. Samuel was one of the first plastic surgeons in Canada to perform liposuction and he has gained a vast experience in this procedure.  Over the years he appeared on television, interviewed on radio and wrote articles on liposuction, which were featured in magazines.

It must be emphasized that liposuction is not aimed at reducing weight, but rather at altering shape by removing fat cells in areas of relative bulges.  Generalized excess weight should be reduced through proper diet and exercise.  There are patients, who are not overweight but have bulges in areas such as the hips, “love handles”, lower abdomen, waist, back, upper arms, inner thighs and knees, as well as under the chin.  These bulges are frequently hereditary in nature and generalized weight loss will not usually result in loss of fat in specific areas only.  Therefore, localized removal of the excess fat cells in the bulge areas addresses these specific bulges.  In younger patients with good skin elasticity, the skin will shrink down after liposuction, as it frequently does to a great extent after a pregnancy.

When liposuction alone is performed, the procedure is carried out as an outpatient in a private plastic surgery facility or in hospital.  Through a small puncture incision an instrument (cannula) is introduced under the skin and with the assistance of suction fat is sculpted away under the skin resulting in a decrease in the size of the bulges in order to produce a more pleasing shape.  The incision is closed with a single dissolvable stitch and the resultant scar is very minimal.  A compressive garment is usually applied to help shape the area and decrease swelling and bruising.  Following surgery the patient is encouraged to ambulate, and since there are no large incisions to heal, patients can quickly return to regular activities while wearing the garment for a few weeks.

It is important for the plastic surgeon to determine whether there is a need to also deal with excess loose skin and/or muscle.  As a very experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Samuel performs various surgeries, including abdominoplasties (tummy tucks), thigh lifts, brachioplasties (arm lifts), and others.  Occasionally when excess fat is liposuctioned in the neck area then the skin may be loose.  This may be especially in older patients where the skin lacks the elasticity to shrink after fat reduction.  To correct this, a neck lift with or without face lift may be performed in order to tighten the skin.  As a well trained and experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Samuel applies his judgment to determine the surgery needed to correct the problem.  He possesses the training and technical ability to do more than just liposuction if needed.

Many people have fatty necks which make them appear generally heavier. This feature is frequently hereditary and creates the impression that the patient has a “double chin” or has “no neck”.  Because young people’s skin is elastic, this problem may ideally be solved with liposuction alone in the area under the chin and jaw, without having to tighten the skin envelope by removing excess skin.  A tiny incision may be made either under the chin or behind the earlobes, liposuction of the neck and chin is carried out. The skin shrinks down to redrape the new contour, and a clearly defined chin and jaw line are recreated.

During the consultation visit, as is his usual practice, Dr. Samuel will obtain a history and examine the patient before undertaking a thorough explanation of the surgical plan, the post-operative course and all the relevant potential consequences.
