Thigh Lifts

Weight gain results in stretching of the skin and loss of elasticity.  This is accentuated with aging as the skin and muscles become more lax.  Patients who are significantly overweight and undergo a large weight loss will notice that the excess skin in various areas of the body will hang unattractively.  This may be true in the neck, upper arms, breasts, abdomen thighs and buttock areas.  More and more patients today undergo bariatric surgery (gastric bypass or banding for morbid obesity) which is followed by dramatic weight loss.  Dr. Samuel has operated on many patients who have lost massive amounts of weight in order to remove the excess, loose skin.  These operations have included face and neck lifts, breast lifts, tummy tucks, thigh lifts, arm reductions, and buttock lifts.  Frequently some of these surgeries are performed together under one anaesthetic.

Laxity in the upper, inner thigh area there may appear as folds of loose skin.  The surgical aim is to remove the extra skin.  If there is excessive fat under the skin this may be reduced with liposuction at the same time.

Thigh lifts can be carried out as outpatient procedures under general anaesthesia.  Before the surgery, Dr. Samuel will outline on the patient’s inner thighs the amount of excess skin that can safely be removed and the skin brought together without excessive tension.  This is done with the patient standing.

In patients with substantial skin laxity the common technique places the resultant scar close to the crease in the groin area.  Patients with very large skin excess in the inner thigh may require a technique that results in a vertical scar in that region in order to remove the excess skin not just in the vertical, but also the circumferential direction.  The surgical procedure must be planned to address the individual patient’s case.

Following surgery the patient has a light strip dressing along the scar.  The stitches are under the skin and dissolve on their own.  Recovery usually takes a couple of weeks.

Before any surgery, a comprehensive assessment and discussion of the expected results, post-operative course and potential complications must be carried out during the consultation with the surgeon.  As a Royal College certified plastic surgeon, who has been operating for more than 25 years, Dr. Samuel’s routine involves this entire process in order to fully inform his patients.  This makes their surgical and post-operative experience less stressful and more rewarding.
